EU-Japan Security Cooperation in Context

Posted on behalf of Professor Emil Kirchner and Professor Han Dorussen

Contemporary international events such as Brexit, the escalation of the North Korean nuclear programme and the fallout from the “America First” policy adopted by President Trump have considerably increased interest in the subject of international security cooperation.

In the case of the EU and Japan, such cooperation has been given further impetus by the recent agreement of the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) and the EU-Japan Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA).

In this context, Professors Emil Kirchner and Han Dorussen will give presentations on developments in security cooperation between the EU and Japan, based on the findings of a two-year international research project involving 25 participants. This will be followed by a ‘round table’ debate in which everyone will be invited to participate and in which related issue such as the North Korean nuclear threat, the assertive Chinese maritime posture, and the implication of the “America First” can be raised.

Refreshments will be provided.
