‘The Challenges of Human Rights in Burma’

Speaker: Kyaw Win, Founder & Executive Director of Burma Human Rights Network (BHRN)

Chair: Dr Andrew Fagan, University of Essex

Kyaw Win will address the ways in which human rights situation of ethnic and religious minorities have worsened since the election of National League for democracy (NLD). Kyaw will discuss the military forces openly committing countless human rights violations, and the role of NLD in progressively strengthening the campaign against other ethnic minorities, including the oppressive laws and movements against non-Rohingya Burmese Muslims. This talk will historically contextualise the anti-Muslim narrative in Burma, including the dynamics between the militarized Buddhist system and the push for democratic reforms. While for many years some in the media and international community have tried to say that Aung San Suu Kyi was faced with the impossible task of promoting democracy against rising populism, they failed to see how she and the NLD also played a role in anti-Muslim sentiment in the country.

Kyaw Win is the founder and Executive Director of the Burma Human Rights Network (BHRN) in London. He leads several different teams inside of Myanmar who are documenting human rights violations, violation of freedom of religion, the spread of hate speech and anti-Muslim pogroms.

All welcome.
