Nazanin's Story : Richard Ratcliffe in Conversation with Carla Ferstman

Speaker: Richard Ratcliffe

Chair: Dr. Carla Ferstman, University of Essex

As a prelude to the showing of Nazanin's Story, please join Richard and Carla for the backstory of this horrific human tragedy and shocking human rights case. The talk will focus on all the efforts taken to seek Nazanin's release, the work with University of Essex students, and the next steps in the campaign.

Richard Ratcliffe has been campaigning tirelessly for his wife - Nazanin Zaghari Ratcliffe - a dual UK-Iran national, to be released from prison in Iran, where she has been held since 3 April 2016. She has been held on spurious grounds, effectively as a hostage to exert pressure on the UK Government. The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and countless other UN bodies, have called for her immediate release. In March 2019, the UK Government formally agreed to grant Nazanin's claim of diplomatic protection, meaning that the Government recognised that the breach of Nazanin's rights constituted a breach of its own rights, paving the way for it to escalate efforts to secure Nazanin's release. Sadly, she is still detained. Richard has not seen Nazanin, or his young daugher Gabriella since Nazanin was arrested more than 3.5 years ago, as she was travelling with her mother at the time of the arrest.

Carla Ferstman is a senior lecturer at the School of Law. She has worked with Richard since Nazanin was arrested, and last year, worked with a team of students at the Human Rights Centre clinic to prepare a report on behalf of family members of dual and foreign nationals detained in Iran, as part of Iran's upcoming Universal Periodic Review before the Human Rights Council. That submission is available online here:

All Welcome.
